Content

Embedded in the broader theoretical context of supply chain management and service management, the lecture introduces basic challenges of managing logistics services. Illustrated by different logistics and transportation systems on land, maritime and air, generic problems are further elaborated and examined from a business model perspective of the central actors. The objective is to help students understand the basic logistics service delivery systems in their contexts; analyze functions and positions of the respective actors; identify constraints and key challenges; apply terminology, concepts and theoretical foundations to examine and compare principle business models.

Essential topics comprise:

  • Starting points for value propositions to users of logistics service providers and the corresponding consequences for business models;
  • Basic network structures, functions and processes for the provision of logistics services, as well as central issues for the design of resource architectures;
  • Key issues such as industrialization, supply chain integration and vertical as well as horizontal cooperation of supply chain actors;
  • Information systems to support logistics services;
  • Current and complementary key issues for managing safety and sustainability issues in logistics service delivery;
  • Macroeconomic view of national and international transport systems, transport modes; regulation/de-regulation as parameters for logistics services.
