Qualification goals

The main focus of the Master's program European Economic Studies (EES) is to deepen economic expertise. It prepares students for the professional requirements of economists in an international environment as well as for a doctorate in economics. The following qualification goals indicate which professional competencies graduates of the program have acquired.

Scientific qualification

After completing the master's program, you will have in-depth knowledge of concepts, theories and methods of microeconomics and macroeconomics (general equilibrium theory, contract theory, agent-based modeling), as well as in-depth knowledge of your chosen specializations in economics and social sciences by attending economics modules. You will be able to characterize, compare and apply these to other specializations.
You have mastered in-depth mathematical and statistical-econometric methods of economic research (dynamic optimization, regression analyses) and, as you have shown in your seminar papers, you can select, adapt and apply them to concrete problems. As you have shown in your seminar papers, you can interpret current economic research results and replicate them in basic terms, transfer them to professional practice and communicate them to the public.
Based on compulsory and optional language classes, you will be able to conduct this discourse in your chosen foreign language on an international level.
In the context of your final thesis on an economic issue, you have shown that you are able to apply theoretical expertise and methodological, professional skills to a complex task in a well-founded manner and to develop contributions of economics to the constructive solution of current challenges.

Qualification for a qualified gainful employment

After completing the master's program, you will be able to comprehensively describe the theoretical, social and political aspects and consequences of individual and macroeconomic decisions, to classify them in a differentiated manner, and to derive recommendations for action for decision-makers in politics and business.
Within the framework of the specializations, you will acquire expertise in the in-depth subject areas that will enable you to quickly familiarize yourself with relevant new factual issues from the political, corporate or academic environment in your professional practice and to produce a critical assessment.
By studying (at least) one foreign business language, you will further develop your foreign language skills. This enables you to communicate at a high level in the chosen foreign language and to use your economic expertise in international institutions or multinational companies. You will be able to act in a professional context with business confidence in the chosen foreign language.
Due to the strong European focus of the modules, you will be familiar with the economically relevant institutions (ECB, European Economic and Monetary Union) as well as the economic development in Europe and will be able to apply this knowledge independently and appropriately in your professional practice.

Personality development

The extensive choices in the area of specialization as well as in the selection of the foreign language of business result in an individual course of study that, in addition to technical content, also enables you to organize yourself, work independently, and accurately assess your own abilities (technical, methodological, and social skills).
In the various specializations, you will develop the necessary flexibility to obtain a differentiated idea of your personal and professional development at the end of your studies. You will be able to independently acquire the current state of economic research through your own continuing education.
The preparation of written seminar papers and theses as well as the oral presentation of seminar projects enable you to assess your personal skills in a differentiated manner and to further develop your individual communication strategies. You will be able to present your own point of view on economic topics in a factual and well-founded manner. In doing so, you will reflect and take into account the views of other people and develop constructive solutions appropriate to the situation and requirements.

Social commitment

The core topic of economics is the problem of scarcity: How can existing resources be used economically and produced goods be distributed appropriately according to social criteria? After completing your studies, you will be able to distinguish between issues of efficiency and distribution in different areas of social life, to recognize possible conflicts of goals and to suggest socially satisfactory compromises.
Within the framework of the obligatory and optional foreign language training as well as due to the content-related reference to Europe, you have acquired intercultural competence which enables you to comprehend current, also complex social disputes from different perspectives and to accompany them constructively as well as in accordance with the requirements. You are able to cooperate internationally.
