Immersive Information Systems (Bachelor | Summer semester)
GAMES-ImmersiveIS-B Immersive Information Systems (6 ECTS | 4 SWS)

Immersive technologies, ranging from Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) to Virtual Reality (VR), enable the fusion of physical reality with virtual objects and spaces. Immersive technologies are increasingly applied in various domains, including entertainment and gaming, healthcare, education, product development, and manufacturing planning. Immersive technologies are considered key drivers of digital transformation and a foundation for the potential realization of the "Metaverse", a potnetial successor to the Internet.
Building on the concept of sociotechnical systems, this lecture examines key aspects of the human-technology interaction and the potential influence immersive information systems may have on the future of work and society. The course addresses current and future opportunities and challenges of immersive technologies, conveys fundamental concepts and design principles, and provides insights into latest research studies. Students will explore practical application examples and experience AR and VR applications firsthand.
After an introduction to the topic, the following subjects will be covered theoretically, methodologically, and to some extent technically:
- Foundations of Immersive Information Systems
- History of Immersive Technologies
- Experiencing AR and VR Systems
- Usability and 3D UI Guidelines
- Human Perception, Cognition, and Action
- Evaluation of Immersive Systems
- Social VR and Avatars
- Metaverse and Virtual Worlds
- Privacy, Security, and Ethical Considerations
- Immersive Systems in Industry and Society
- Designing Immersive Worlds
Course Overview
The workload for this module is structured approximately as follows:
Participation in lectures and exercises: ~45 hours in total
Preparation and review of lectures and exercises (including research and study of additional sources): ~90 hours
Exam preparation: ~45 hours (based on the materials covered as outlined above)
The number of participants is limited. If capacity restrictions require a selection process, admission will be decided after the registration deadline according to the regulations for student enrollment in restricted-capacity courses in bachelor's and master's programs.
Please note that registration does not automatically guarantee admission to the course or enrollment for the module examination.
Lectures are in German, slides are available in English.
Learning Objectives
Students will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of immersive information systems and learn to analyze and discuss such systems. The goal is to impart in-depth knowledge of the technological foundations of immersive technologies, relevant aspects of human-technology interaction, key design principles of immersive systems, evaluation of immersive systems and opportunities and challenges of immersive technologies in work and society
