Admission

Requirements for the Master's program International Software Systems Science:

  • Academic bachelors degree of at least six semesters (180 ECTS) in Software Systems Science or in a closely related bachelors degree programme* such as, but not limited to Informatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering.
  • Final overall grade in the bachelors degree must be at least second class corresponding to the German grade 2.0.
  • English language proficiency must be above level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), corresponding to at least IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90 (internet based) or equivalent.
  • Applicants with a qualifying degree from ouside the European Union (Lissabon Convention) and whose final mark of the qualifying degree is less than 1.5 (German grade), require a Graduate Record of Examination (GRE) General Test or a Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) with at least 153 in Verbal Reasoning, 164 in Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 in Analytical Writing.

*A closely related bachelors degree must cover:

  • At least 115 ECTS credit points worth of modules in mathematical foundations, computer science and software engineering including a bachelors thesis in one of these fields or in applied computer sciences
  • At least 34 ECTS credit points in Mathematics and Theoretical Foundations of Computer Science (covering propositional and predicate logic, linear algebra, calculus, probability theory, automata and formal languages, mathematical software analysis)
  • At least 33 ECTS credit points in Programming and Software Science (covering procedural and non-procedural programming, algorithms and data structures, object-oriented modelling and software engineering)

Information on university admission and the recognition of foreign school-leaving qualifications is also available from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Your application must include originals or notarised copies of the following documentation in German, English, French or Spanish (for documents in other languages you must additionally provide a notarised translation of the originals).

Application Deadlines

Please be aware that the application process can take several weeks, in particular if you are living outside of the European Union and your bachelors degree is not obtained under the regulations of the European Higher Education Area (Bologna Process). The current application deadline for entry in the Winter Semester is the 15th of July and for entry in the Summer Semester the deadline is the 15th of January. Since these deadlines may change on short notice, please check the Registrar's Office web pages for the effective application deadlines.

Non-EU applicants not currently residing in Germany should apply as early as possible. The online application portal is open from mid May for the Winter semester and from mid November for the following Summer semester. Checking international university entry qualifications may take 10 weeks or longer. On top, you should also leave sufficient time for visa applications, finding accommodation and making travel arrangements. You may also want to arrive in Bamberg a couple of weeks before the semester starts. This gives you time to settle in and get acquainted with your new cultural environment.

Can I Enroll and Participate in Classes from Abroad While I Wait for my Visa?

The course programme is based on face-to-face teaching. We expect you to attend classes in person. Some classes provide online teaching materials but there is no online tuition or hybrid teaching available. Exams must be taken in person at Bamberg.

Enrollment from abroad is only sensible if (i) you already have your visa and (ii) you are sure you will be able to arrive at Bamberg within the first two weeks of the teaching semester. In all other cases we strongly advise you postpone your enrollment to the next semester. Please contact the Registrar's Office for information on extending your course admission.
